Vietnam Legislature Confirms New Deputy Prime Ministers

Vietnam’s one-party national assembly has approved two new deputy prime ministers, one day after installing new Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
The government Wednesday announced the confirmation of Nguyen Sinh Hung and Truong Vinh Trong as new deputies. Pham Gia Khiem will stay on in a duel role as both deputy prime minister and foreign minister
Vietnamese state-run media report that several legislators protested the fact that former transportation minister Dao Dinh Binh was allowed to resign without punishment. Binh has been embroiled in a major corruption scandal but a majority of legislators voted to allow him to resign rather than be fired.
The new cabinet members come as part of a planned leadership change by the ruling Communist Party.
Vietnamese lawmakers also approved Nguyen Minh Triet as the new president, a largely ceremonial position.
Dung, 56, is the youngest prime minister since the end of the Vietnam war in 1975. He previously served as deputy to Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, who retired Saturday at age 72.
The new president, Mr. Triet, 63, is currently Communist Party chief for the southern commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City. He takes over from President Tran Duc Luong, 69, who served two five-year terms.
